"The best thing you can do for your children is to love their father." Anonymous

Perhaps it is because we leave for Paris next Sunday. My two middle children and I will be traveling with the Ridgefield Symphony Youth Orchestra on a seven-day tour, performing in medieval cathedrals for Parisians and tourists alike in three concerts throughout the week.

Perhaps it is because I watched the book, "French Women Don't Get Fat: The Secret of Eating for Pleasure," catapult to bestseller status on Amazon and to the No. 2 spot on Barnes & Noble. Other bestsellers included "Barefoot in Paris" and "Guy Savoy: Simple French Recipes for the Home Cook" by the renowned French chef. Even Julia Child remains on the bestseller lists at most book chains.

I've never been to Paris, and I am a self-acknowledged disinterested cook. Truly not "into it." Not into the gourmet thing, the foie gras thing, or the wine thing, I spend my days not in the kitchen, but in my office or my studio, writing or painting…or in the chemo clinic, hooking primitive rugs while watching medicine drip into my son's port-a-cath. Not one to either read travelogues or purchase cookbooks-

Traveling in Mexico: What to Do First When You Get There

Changing Dollars To Pesos and other Money Matters

The exchange rate for changing U.S. dollars to Mexican pesos is fairly stable. However, exchange rates can vary considerably from one money exchange house (Casa de Cambio) to another. The best rates are often at the airport but even there different money exchange houses offer different rates. Check around at the airport before you go to the "Sitio Official" to take a taxi to your hotel. Buy at least enough pesos to tide you over for a couple of days. (taxis, hotel, meals, etc.) Once you're in the Historic District though, you'll have to shop for the best available rate on any given day. Don't buy your pesos at the Casas de Cambio across from the Zocalo, in the Zona Rosa or from your hotel, they always pay the absolute worst rates. The avenida Madero has quite a number of Casas de Cambio. Walk along the avenida from Palma down two or three blocks (heading away from the Zocalo) comparing rates at five or six places before buying any pesos. You can save yourself some money if you do.

Speaking of Money

Speaking of money, if you have a bank debit card, an ATM card or credit card from your bank outside of Mexico, they will in fact work in the ATM machines here in Mexico. You will get pesos from your withdrawals instead of U.S. dollars. Be careful though, because bank fees vary from bank to bank and some of them charge pretty stiff fees. (which you won't know about for a month or so when it's too late) If you need money from home in a hurry it can be worth the fees to have the cash deposited to your bank at home and to withdraw it using your ATM card. Why not check with your bank before you leave home to find out what the affiliate Mexican bank is. That way you will minimize the fees you pay using the ATMs. For credit card purchases your home bank will wait for days or even weeks in some cases to get the best possible exchange rate. (it's for them, not you, but you still benefit anyway)

Mountain Zebra national Park in Southern Africa

Situated just outside of the town of Cradock, some 280km from Port Elizabeth or 800km from Cape Town and the same distance from Johannesburg, is the Mountain Zebra National Park. This stunningly beautiful wildlife retreat is characterised by the lusciously green mountain landscapes typical of the Eastern Cape Midlands, making this a scenic home to the Cape mountain zebra and a welcoming environment for those wishing to escape the city life in favour of a wildlife experience in this enchanting National Park.

Of particular interest is the fact that there are only around 300 Cape mountain zebra left in the wild today. There can be little doubt this is a dangerously low number for any species, but that there are even this many is largely thanks to the proclaiming of the Mountain Zebra National Park in 1937. Since then this park has gone a long way in saving this endangered zebra from extinction. Witnessing these gracious striped creatures on the Eastern Cape mountain slopes makes for a memorable visit indeed.

Of course there are a wide variety of other animals on which visitors can feast their eyes upon, in this park you can expect to see wild animals in their natural setting, including the Cape buffalo, black rhinoceros, eland, gemsbok, black wildebeest and red hartebeest, while the caracal (a wild cat) is the main predator in the park.

Walks through the reserve offer the best opportunities to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Mountain Zebra National Park, with a large variety of bird life to enjoy. The paths are well kept, making walking a pleasure. The Rooiplaat Plateau is an especially good place to view the park's game. As this region has sunny weather throughout the year it is advisable to bring along a hat and sun block to protect yourself from the African sun. That being said, the winter months can still be rather chilly, so remember to pack sufficient warm clothing. Also make sure that you carry enough water to keep you hydrated on bush walks, and of course remember your camera and binoculars!

Although the park does not provide accommodation facilities, this is not to be considered a problem, as accommodation and other services are available in the nearby small town of Cradock, where you will find the locals to be both friendly and welcoming. For the international visitor looking to fly to the nearest city, the park is most easily reached from Port Elizabeth, known in South Africa as the friendly city.

A Cruise Vacation That Can Include Airline Reservations

An air-sea cruise is when your cruise vacation has been booked with airline reservations to get you to the ship's port and back home again. The cruise line buys its tickets in bulk from the airlines. They find out where you are coming from for your cruise travel and book you passage from a nearby airport to one close to the cruise ship's home port. Each cruise line has its own policy on how they deal with the sale of airline tickets, so here are some cruise tips in that area.

What is the cost of the tickets if I book them with my cruise?

The amount will be quoted when you book and will be shown on your bill.

If I need to cancel, are the refund policies different for the plane tickets than for the cruise?

No, as long as you cancel before the penalty phase begins.

Is there a service fee charged to have the Cruise Line issue my Airline reservations?

Only if you use their air deviations plan. The fee is around $50.00 each.

Do I have any choice in which Airline is used?

Yes, if you use there air deviation plan.

Can I get credit for my frequent flyer mileage if the cruise lines books my airline reservations?

No. You can use your frequent flyers if you book on your own.

Can I fly nonstop or have any control over the route that is taken, or do I just get what ever they find?

Here again, use the air deviation plan.

How do I get from the Airport to the ship's pier?

If you have booked an air/sea cruise vacation the cruise lines will supply you with a voucher for a shuttle bus. If you booked your own airline reservations it will be up to you to get to the port.

Is there a shuttle service available from the airport where you'll be arriving? Is there a charge for this service or is it included? Is the service included if you don't book your flight through the Cruise Line?

If you book your flights through the cruise lines, there will be a shuttle and you

use your transfer.

How and when do I meet up with Cruise Line personnel?

They will be standing in the baggage claim area and will hold a sign with the name of the ship. They will direct you to the shuttle.

How is my luggage handled, do I have to pick it up at the airport or is it automatically sent to the ship?

You will have to pick it up at the airport and then the shuttle will take it to the ship with you.

What accommodations, if any, are made if the Airline they use causes me to miss the ship?

If you have booked with the cruise lines they will accommodate you by getting a hotel room for the night and a flight to the next port.

There are many advantages to booking an air-sea package for your cruise travel. The cruise line takes care of the airline reservation. Since cruise lines buy in bulk and usually provide a discount package rate, the ticket price is generally lower than what can be found in the general market. The transfer of luggage is easier, and a free shuttle will take you from the airport to the docks for your cruise vacation.

The cruise line will have your flight information and will be able to track your flight in case of a delay. Others on the cruise might be on the same flight and they might just hold the ship waiting for you to board. The biggest advantage is that if anything goes wrong to delay you, the cruise line will generally become more involved in getting you to the ship.

There, of course, are disadvantages as well to booking an air-sea package. You might be able to find a better deal on your own, or you may have to fly an airline you don't like. You will not get credit for frequent flyer miles by going through the cruise line, and you might not be able to fly non-stop. Finally, you might end up flying a longer route than you'd pick for yourself.

You could book your own airline tickets, but only do so if you can get a better deal. The strongest consideration should be how confident you are in being able to make it to the ship for your cruise vacation on your own. If you are already flying in a few days early, know you'll be there on time and you can save over the air-sea on plane tickets and shuttle costs, then you might just consider going it alone. But, remember you are going it alone. In many cruise reviews it is recommended that you book your airline reservation with the cruise line.

The cruise lines will be more likely to make accommodations and work with the airline if their booking didn't get you to the ship on time. They will be better able to track your late flight and might even delay the ship if they know you'll only be slightly late. There have been many cruise vacations that have delayed the departure from port especially if there is a large group of cruise travelers on a late plane.

Depending on the circumstances, they might even rebate some of your cruise or give you a discount toward your next cruise vacation with them. However, the airlines are independent contractors. Most cruise conditions of carriage state that since the airlines are independent contractors the cruise line makes no warranty and assumes no responsibility for any failure or delay in their contractor's services. This is another reason to purchase a strong trip insurance package.

When you book your own airline tickets for your cruise vacation, if the route you picked to make it to the ship fails, you are on your own. Don't risk missing your cruise travel over a few frequent flyer miles. No matter how you get to your cruise vacation, try to avoid this situation by booking a flight that leaves you plenty of time to get you to and from the pier to the airport. It is recommended that your go on the internet and read the many cruise reviews on this subject.

Happy Cruising!

I Love Christmas Fruitcake

As a child, while visions of sugar plums danced in the heads of children around the world on Christmas eve, I dreamed of candied orange peel, candied lemon peel, candied citron, candied cherries, raisins, ginger, chopped walnuts, chopped pecans, grated lemon rind, brandy, vanilla cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, mixed into a batter made of baking powder, flour, sugar and eggs. I remember watching mom mixing these ingredients together to make the perfect fruit cake!

From the time when I was a mere child, and discovered that Christmas was really all about eating, I was addicted to fruitcake. To me, nothing epitomized the meaning of Christmas like that of my mother's fruitcakes that she made from scratch. This was of course before I knew that Christmas was really a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ some 2000 plus years ago. Until that time, the success of my Christmas depended on whether my mother had felt like baking the cake a month before.

I often wondered why she would make a cake in November only to cut into it a month later in December. Growing up I eventually learned that she would soak a cloth in my wayward uncle's whiskey that she'd would pilfer while he was asleep, soak a cloth with the brandy or whatever spirits he was consuming at the time, and insert it in the center of the fruitcake which was baked in a bunt pan. The whiskey would soak into the cake, giving it a tang that couldn't be made any other way.

Fruitcake addiction hasn't been limited to me. History tells us in the early 1800's, fruitcake, then called plum cake, was outlawed throughout continental Europe. It seems that the powers that be back then thought the cake was so good it just had to be sinful. Since flagrant sinning was a no-no, Royalty put its foot down and banned the fruit cake! I suspect they were correct on that decision. A good fruitcake is so delicious it is almost a sin to enjoy it as much as I do. Thankfully it's not banned in Alabama.

As to the decadence of the fruitcake, a rumor that has lasted for a couple of centuries, reveal that Queen Victoria received a fruitcake for her birthday one year but waited another year to eat it. She wanted to show that the elite could show restraint and good taste while enjoying in moderation such a tasty treat. This restraint has unfortunately followed her to this century for many folks decry the virtues of the noble fruitcake!

Not everyone has been enamored of the fruitcake as I have been. Over the years people have made jokes about them that have not really been in good taste, but then good taste is not something that is in abundance in our society. Bad jokes about the fruitcake have been around for years. Everyone has heard the one liners concerning this wonderful cake:

'Fruitcakes make good door stops.'

'Fruitcakes make good weights on a grandfather clock.'

'Fruitcakes make good Christmas wreaths.'

'Fruitcakes make good Curling stones.'

'There is really only one fruitcake; it's just been passed around for hundreds of years'

There's no accounting for bad taste. These and other jokes have made a mockery of the awesome fruitcake.

While commercial bakeries do indeed make excellent fruitcakes, I still wish I could taste one like my mother used to make when I was a kid. I am making this my one big mission in life

German Memory in Asia: My Jungle Memories in a Tsunami Mission

When we were at the tail end of our journey back to Kilinochchi, I observed there were some people crying under a mango tree in the front of the hospital premises.

Their story was too pathetic. One person had lost her sister and the other one her entire family. I realized the tragedies beyond consolation and words so trivial. The German Praktikum (Internship) students too were listening to them patiently. I didn't know how they would adjust themselves to the future. We reluctantly left them to join our team who were about to leave.

Our six-vehicle convoy sped along the path, which we came by an hour ago. We passed through the devastated Mullaitivu area again, without stopping, as we had to reach the Jaffna Peninsula at our earliest possible. But the silently waving Indian Ocean in the distance brought so many memories back to my mind once again.

After a few miles of traveling I joined the German T.V. in their vehicle, as they wanted to go early to Dambulla Hotel, which is in the midst of dense jungle. With a better-fixed satellite antenna it would enable them to quickly transmit the documentary rather than with their mobile-antenna devices which they were carrying all the way with them.

They had had a bitter experience when they used mobile-antenna devices the previous day night at the Pandyan Restaurant in Kilinochchi. The transmission was disturbed a number of times and they had lost the prime time News hours in Germany to telecast the documentary which they had taken in on the way to Kilinochchi about the war-torn jungle terrain of the Island.

I became very friendly with the German T.V. personnel on our way back to Kilinochchi. We met the LTTE media coordinator and had a brief conversation with him. After few minutes the TV crew left towards their southern destination.

I arranged a vehicle and traveled to the Iranaimadu Tank, one of the largest reservoirs in the Island, a place in the world, where I was enchanted by the serene beauty of its surrounding greeneries and circling of birds over it since my CARE days.

When I was traveling, I passed the area where once the LTTE's Economic Development Wing was based. During my CARE days, I visited it a number of times on project issues on how to resettle the displaced refugees in the jungles. I could still remember the number of field visits, which I paid in dense jungles.

It was a habit of mine on my visits, to take some magazines either TIME or Newsweek and read them on the bunds of the reservoirs. I experienced a different perception of life when I read about the space-age society of the outside world from the environment of the nearly stone-age society in the jungles and their surroundings. I had visited several times the Iranaimadu tank and experienced the difference.

When I reached the tank the circling around of birds over it once again enticed me.

I found myself lost in a different world, which was free of all worries and troubles!

Planning a Relaxing Vacation

A common so-called irony in life, is when a person finally gets around to taking a much needed vacation, and falls ill as soon as they are away from work.

The reason for this situation being common is easily explained. Most people, as they are preparing for a vacation, are in a hectic state; trying to tie up loose ends at work, getting packed, finding a house and or pet sitter, finding visas or passports, organizing and cleaning the house, getting the yard prepared, creating "to do" lists for people, the list goes on. When you finally set off on your vacation, your body needs a break. Your immune system has been suffering from lack of sleep and excess stress. It's an ideal time for a virus to attack and get a solid foothold.

There's another reason illness attacks during vacation. Often people choose a trip that is not relaxing for them.

Two years ago my wife and I went on a vacation with friends. We went cross-country skiing at a resort. The cabin we stayed in was beautiful, we were surrounded with close friends, and the weather was nice - Seemed like a recipe for a wonderful vacation. Unfortunately, our friends were far better skiers than us, and ran us so ragged we were painfully stiff for days. Also, we let loose in the evenings, and trying to keep up with our friends' drinking proved to be a big mistake. My wife and I returned from our vacation exhausted and ill.

The way to avoid a poor vacation is to plan ahead.

- Think about what the purpose of the vacation is. If your aim is to reduce tension after a busy time at work, make sure the destination will give you the peace and calm you need.

- Take a vacation before your vacation. Take three or four days off work before your vacation begins, so that you can get organized, and begin to slow down your pace gradually.

- Get prepared, well before your vacation. If you will need any documentation (visa/passport), prescriptions, reservations, tickets, etc

Cheap International Flights and Travel

If you've been shopping for cheap flights online, you no doubt have occasionally found yourself in the "Twilight Zone" of international travel costs. I speaking of course about the difference in valuations of the various currencies used throughout the world. Unlike a national purchase where everything is dollar based, the international market uses a basket of currency or the local currency of the country where traveling. This can lead to some very unpleasant surprises if not careful.

So how can someone see the world without going bankrupt while trying to get to see it all? The answer is careful shopping. Last minute deals are available for those with a less than strict time schedule. This method of travel has been known as "stand by" air travel for years. Using this method of cheap travel, you go to the airport, buy a ticket and sign in to wait if you can get on the plane. Full fare customers come first, then if any seats are left, they are offered to stand by folks at the heavily discounted rate.

Of course, not all of us have the time or inclination to for leisure flight times. The next best alternative to full fare, expensive international air travel tickets is the consolidator. Here, a wholesaler, or consolidator purchases a block of tickets for a specified flight, day or time. These blocks of seats have been discounted to the wholesaler because the purchase was made as part of an ongoing agreement or simply due to the "buy in bulk" discount.

Care must be taken as travel agencies will sometimes use the services of consolation companies to gain low cost tickets to sell. The travel agency will then typically add service charges to cover their overhead and profit. This can sometimes be significant but may be the only way to get at least a somewhat discounted rate for some of the more popular travel destinations

A quick search on the web can deliver all types of potentially cost saving offers for cheap international tickets. Care must be taken because although many will claim the lowest prices, the fact is that additional charges, fees and costs may not all be included in each offer. Be sure to measure apples to apples when pricing tickets from a variety of consolidators. Some have been known to lower the price of the fare then charge extra high service fees to make it for the seemingly lower fare. Make certain when to find out the final, total cost for your international airfare ticket before making the commitment!

Virginia Beach Vacation Rentals

Vacationing in Virginia Beach means spending hours at the beach and enjoying the numerous cultural and outdoor activities that abound in this coastal town. As a popular resort destination, you will find numerous restaurants, shops, and amusements down by the water so why not stay close to all the action by choosing the convenience and amenities of a vacation home rental.

You can find vacation rentals throughout Virginia Beach but the most popular option is those that sit directly on the golden sands with views of the crystal blue water. Oceanfront homes make it easy to enjoy the wonder and excitement of the beach since a day of fun and amusement is just a short walk out the back door. Whether you choose to stay directly behind your house rental or venture further down the sand, accessing the beach is easier than you ever imagined when you stay in vacation rental.

While there are numerous hotels that line the shores of Virginia Beach, they lack the convenience and accessibility of a house rental. Rather than standing around, holding all your beach supplies as you wait for an elevator, you simply need to open the door and the sand stands before you. Make numerous trips in and out of the house to replenish your supplies in just a few minutes or head back to make a fresh lunch for the family as they play near surf. Your day at the beach can be much more relaxing and enjoyable when you take advantage of the location and easy access of your accommodations.

Although the kids may believe you can spend every day at the beach, most vacations are packed with other activities such as viewing historical attractions or picking up souvenirs from local vendors. The beach area is the most popular place in Virginia Beach for activities like these since the boardwalk is jam-packed with ways to fill an afternoon or an entire day. When you stay in a waterfront home rental, you can walk to the boardwalk and enjoy the best of what Virginia Beach has to offer without dealing with the stress or headache of finding a remotely close parking spot.

While a hassle-free vacation with numerous activities within walking distance is the goal of most vacation planners, you simply cannot control Mother Nature and what she decides to throw at you. When it's raining outside and you cannot take advantage of your great location, enjoy the amenities of your vacation rental and the quiet it initiates. No more fighting over one TV as there are numerous throughout the house and forget about staring out the window, wishing the rain to just go away. You can log on to the wireless internet, pop in a DVD for a cozy afternoon, or snatch a book off the shelf and catch up on your reading. While the rain outside may be deafening, the peacefulness inside will be a welcoming and restful change to most rained-out vacation days.

If the beach is just one of the many reasons you are visiting Virginia Beach, consider a home rental that is tucked away amidst towering trees for the privacy and seclusion you typically forfeit on vacation. Rather than dealing with the noise and crowds of the beach, you can rest at any time of day and make your way out of your rental without worrying about the masses slowing you down. Your backyard is fenced in, so enjoy a comfortable dinner on the patio without any unwanted interruptions as you soak in the sweet song of the birds chirping overhead and the serenity of the branches gently swaying in the refreshing breeze.

Virginia Beach vacation rentals make it easy to experience the vacation your have planned and are an excellent entertainment option when unforeseen circumstances take control. Begin your search for the perfect condo our home rental today so you can find the one that has all the amenities you need to realize the vacation of your dreams.
