Gift Cards - Does The Perfect Gift Need Perfecting?

You have a list of folks you want to send gifts to. Many are out of state. Then there are your immediate siblings. Some you know well. Others? You just don't have a clue as to what half of them like? So you consider giving them a gift certificate. After all money doesn't grow on trees. The fact is with the cost of gas doubling over the past few years, inflation on our heels and the growth in family reunion attendance, offsetting the cost of gift giving by finding low priced items that every body loves has become an even greater challenge then it ever has been. Thus the growing popularity of gift cards.

The National Retail Federation anticipated $17.24 billion worth of holiday sales last year in gift cards. The reasons gift cards are so frequently bought in place of other items are numerous. No one wants to give a gift that is not appreciated. In addition, who wants to burden down an aging relative with having to drive several miles to a store she nevers shops in order to exchange the gift.

Mark Askew, founder of http://prepaid-gift-card.fimark.net says, "Folks once thought that with a gift card you couldn't go wrong trying to please. And this seemed logical at the time. Thus as gift cards gained popularity many merchants jumped on the bandwagon. But until recently gift card weren't all they were thought to be."

All too true. For instance, what if you give a gift card from a sporting goods store to someone who's not into sports? Or a gift to shop a jewelry store to someone who lives too great a distance from the store to even bother to shop there.

But has the gift card changed all that much over the past three or more years? Perhaps. Prepaid gift cards issued by VISA and MasterCard offer a way to use a gift card anywhere credit cards are accepted. Prepaid debit card issuers and 60 percent of store gift card issuers offer the potential to obtain a replacement card with the remaining balance if the original is lost or stolen. But getting a replacement may require the purchase receipt and the card number. Some companies may accept other proof of purchase. The gift card recipient would have to have all these papers to obtain a replacement. No wonder a significant percentage of gift cards have gone unredeemed. That said, when buying a gift card, look carefully at the pre-purchase disclosures of terms and conditions on the web site and the packaging in the store. If terms are not given or appear too cryptic to be complete don't buy.

So when a recipient receives a store issued gift card from a store they don't like obviously the card just sits in a dresser drawer until it's long past the expiration date? Are merchants pocketing the cash while the gift card purchasers just throw away money? That was once the case. But companies like Sears announced it is eliminating expiration dates from all gift cards issued beginning December 17, 2003. Other card issuers have been quickly following suit.

In addition to less expiration date worries there are now a handful of companies dedicated to redeeming major retail gift cards for recipients of unwanted, unredeemed gift cards. One site, thegiftassistant.com, offers gift card ordering, redemption programs as well as gift card exchanges. Many of these companies offer services for such card issuers as Best Buy Starbucks and Outback SteakHouse. Still with all the recent changes in favor of the recipient losing the impersonal commercial stigma associated with gift cards has been a challenge.

Some gift card websites have gone to great lengths to overcome this obstacle. Now you can upload your own images and add your own text to create a custom card. Embossed text gives the card that engraved look, a very personal touch.

Still with all the work to personalize a gift card they still seem to need help to stand out in the crowd of greeting cards and gift bags. After all a gift card is four times smaller that a simple greeting card and weighs only a few ounces. Does this mean that gifts card don't have what it takes to stand out among large presents? Some issuers compensate for this by upping the monetary value of gifts cards. Some cards values far outweigh any large dominating boxed gift. From $200 to $300 or more. With the advent of prepaid debit gift cards from VISA, MasterCard, American Express and DiscoverCard folks can give a gift card valued at $500 to as much as $3000 dollars depending on the provider. Perhaps big things do come in small packages.

Important gift card tips:

Retain a copy of all the purchase receipts and the card numbers. Mail original receipts to recipient. Papers including instructions and card use should also be sent to the client as some cards do not have expiration dates printed on the card itself.

With all the attention gift cards have been given these past few years it would seem they are here to stay. Just make sure you can find them once you've put them away. And above all exchange or redeem the non-debit kind.

How to Make Christmas Decorating Fun

Christmas decorating indoor and outdoor can be fun and the whole family can have a great time on the adventure. One of the favorite things to do for making a cheap yuletide ornament is to use holiday cards that you received from previous years. One type of outdoor addition is a homemade Santa sled, this can be a great component of the holiday scene. Perhaps the most iconic and popular air blown Christmas decoration is the snowman. Those of us living in the northern hemisphere wish for snow so that the kids can make a snowman on Christmas day. No well dressed home is complete without an assortment of poinsettias. The Original Popcorn on a String addition is made to be enjoyed by everyone. Another old favorite outdoor classic is the color lights strung along the outside of the home and on trees and plants in the garden. The Christmas goat, a popular Swedish Christmas ornament is most often made of straw and is the oldest Swedish yuletide symbol. The purpose of outdoor Christmas decoration is to spread the joy of the season to every aspect of your home and garden . Another favorite addition is the Christmas bush, a native plant which sports tiny red-flowered leaves.

Although only 1% of Japan's population is Christian, Christmas decoration is prominently displayed during December, and the feast is generally observed. In Germany, Thanksgiving is not observed but homes are dressed up as early as October. As with other western traditions, celebrating the holiday season is beginning to seep into the Asian culture. Another plant used for generating the festive mood is mistletoe, which the Druids believed protected against injury. Mistletoe, hung up as a seasonal decoration is a symbol of love and reconciliation. A common northern European Christmas decoration is a little white church on white cotton, red lights showing through Gothic windows.

If you want to add color to your outdoor efforts this season, then use the simple and inexpensive ways. Dressing up the outdoors at this special time of year holds a special place in people's hearts. It adds a touch of holiday magic to the landscape, tabletop, or outdoor trees. Color lights strung are essential to any outdoor holiday theme. Outdoor Christmas decoration can be just as fun and just as festive as the indoor version. An inflatable outdoor ornament can turn a bare yard into a delightful display that people of all ages will love. On that note, there is a garden supply company just outside Toronto which transforms its property into a magical winter wonderland every Christmas. People often travel hundreds of miles to observe this spectacle each yuletide.

When planning your Christmas decorations remember that your yard can be used to add to the festive mood by stringing some lights on a tree or a bush in the yard, particularly attractive are flashing color lights, this doesn't have to be an expensive effort. However, adding a few seasonal touches to the outdoors can help to bring a greater communal feeling to your neighborhood. These efforts can be homemade and inexpensive, in my childhood home money was in short supply to put it mildly. However each yuletide my mother transformed our home in an attractive beautiful show piece with some inexpensive color paper made into ribbons hung from the rafters of the house. She used some of the same color paper to make bunches of flowers, they were so beautiful that each year she would have orders from other women in the neighborhood. These flowers were carefully displayed all year long in the living rooms of the neighborhood. So remember that the Christmas decorating traditions you establish today can have a positive impact on into the future. In the end isn't that what a part of Christmas is about?

Young Men Trying to Imitate the 9-11 Scenario, Part IV

In conclusion of this young man who crashed a single engine Cessna 152 into the Bank of America we see a whole chain of events; events, which should not have occurred at all. What can we do to prevent such kids from going astray in our society? Read the conclusion of my thoughts and perhaps you might find and answer to these questions.

We need to reward those who achieve success in everything they do, encourage kids to think, reason, adapt and overcome. Teach kids not to give up like our present generation having changed jobs every 3.2 years, change majors 5 times in college, change significant others every 3-4 years in marriage. We are not teaching stability, hard work ethics or even stick-to-it-ness. Our grandparents warned us of this, in their struggles of the depression, yet we have learned nothing as a society. We will face the same challenges without fixing the problem. History is repeating what we already know. And we are sitting here watching it unfold and placing blame on everyone else. That young man who crashed into that building is our fault, yours and mine, yes his too. Not just the FAA, FARs, and it is not government's problem, it is our problem as a society and the values we are placing on our youth. Do not expect government to fix it. If you ask government to fix it, they make more laws and more worthless rhetoric ensues at the podiums and in the halls of congress and every photo-op TV, Radio show, and newspaper. What about National Mentors Month. Why not show this as an issue. Give the CAP control over the problems. Let the older pilots talk with the kids, take them up in aircraft, show them, explain their experiences. Not to convince them to teach them all they have learned and let those young people come to their own conclusions and they will lead us into the future. They will live longer than we will and it appears they are smarter too. And give the CAP its credibility back, and their tax write-offs and their status symbols of calling themselves what ever they want. Colonel, Sgt, Major, whatever if it makes them happy. This gives them a since of status they may not have been able to achieve, it gives them respect they want and helps them help the kids. We need to set up plans to get this country back into tiptop shape. The longer we wait to fix it the worse it will be. The answer is not to put kids on Prozac and Ridlin, to put them in jail, humiliate them with trash pick-up on the Freeway. First we fix the problems then we should have a lot less kids to punish. There is also a group out of Houston of Helicopter Pilots, mostly law enforcement who take kids for aircraft rides. The Eagles program with the EAA took 400,000 young people for aircraft rides last year. This is a great way to show kids there is more to this world than meets the eye. Amelia Earhart got an airplane ride in her teens and she was hooked. Look what she did for women and women's rights with all her speaking engagements and notoriety. There are so many pilots and so many great people that are pilots. Not letting young people fly is like not letting Tiger Woods on a golf course, it's just stupid, yet that was not that long ago was it. I imagine if Hitler knew about Jesse Owens ability, he would never have been allowed in Munich for the Olympic games. We keep doing stupid things and the people we call experts keep making more dumb laws about stuff they do not know about. How many Congressmen had to wash airplanes to learn to fly at a young age? One maybe two. Do you honestly think they would vote for more laws in aviation? Certainly not, yet they are the ones who know about such, who are able to change policy. Why don't they stick up for what is right here and say something? If it were not for our victories in the air in previous wars we would not be able to maintain our countries freedom. We would not be here today. President Bush Sr. was 17-18 when he was shot down in a torpedo plane in WWII. On a mission that most did not come back from. He almost did not. Are we to say that our Presidents experience could never have existed in today's times? The answer is YES, that is what we are saying. Why are we saying that? Are we to believe that the media and all its crap and scare tactics are really the policy makers and the congress only votes for things that their brain dead constituency thinks is right? Based on what? The constituencies 5 hour per not TV addiction and 7 second TV switcher channel check mentality. The policy makers' vote for whatever the poles say is right.

It is okay to help our young people, those who put forth real effort to achieve the carrot once in a while. We should help them get there, whenever we can as long as they are truly striving for it. Let's make the American dream a reality, and let's boo off the stage the policy makers who use scare tactics, photo-ops and rhetoric to achieve new heights in political stature. We need policy makers with balls, those who will say no, those who take charge and those who believe in what America is all about. Those who forget should re-read the Constitution of the United Sates of America. We do not need any more rules in general aviation. Think on this.

Tips for Travelling in the Desert

Most of the scenic destination profiles and photos you'll see on my Scenic Treasures site will be in the Southwestern area of the United States. And just like any other area of the world where weather can be extreme, there are things you should know before starting out on your adventure. Even if you're just planning a day trip, these are very important:

1. Take extra water. Both for your vehicle and the people travelling with you. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 1 gallon per person, plus 1 or more gallons for your car.

2. Take snacks or dried food items. This should be something that can hold up to a lot of heat. The desert gets extremely hot at certain times of the year, and inside your car it can go well above 150 degrees. So you want food items that can withstand those temperatures without going bad.

3. Take blankets, sheets, towels, or other items that can block the sun. If your car breaks down, you can hang these on the windows to keep most of the strength out, thus keeping out some of the heat, and keeping you from becoming severely sunburned.

4. Wear a hat. This is especially important for people with light colored or thin hair, because your scalp will sunburn badly - very quickly.

5. Keep gloves on hand. This sounds strange, but if your car is parked in the sun for even a short amount of time, everything in it becomes extremely hot. Getting back in and just touching the steering wheel for instance, or trying to turn the ignition key, can literally burn your skin. It's like touching a hot stove.

6. Beware of leather seats. This is critical particularly for baby car seats. The leather heats up drastically when the sun is directly on it. But even without the sun, leather gets super hot in the desert during the day and it can burn you very badly.

The Greenery Of Outer London

As one leaves the area which is known as Central London one will find peace and quite. First of all one has left the hustle and bustle of the city on top of that one has the added advantage of visiting may parks and gardens which lie in the outskirts of London.

Alexandra Palace which is at the top of the steeply sloping Alexander Park, one can have a panoramic view of London. It has the great Victorian glass-house and is popularly known as 'Ally Pally', once housed the BBC's television studio and the first BBC telecast went out live from the Alexandra Palace studios in 1936. However now the building is an entertainment and exhibition centre, with an indoor ice-skating rink. The park has 200 acres and has been given free access to public. The park around the Palace has sporting facilities and plenty of attractions for children. Its features include a children?s playground, boating lake and small animal enclosure.

The Blackheath Park is south-west to Greenwich Park, and has 170 acres of open heath and has a long history. The area was a rallying spot for huge groups entering London from the east. The heath has two ponds, one used for boating at the weekends.

Dulwich Park is an old park which was established in the reign of Queen Victoria. It has 75 wooded acres and there is a great view of the mast of the Crystal Palace TV transmitter.

Epping Forest is the remnant of one of the great oak forests that bordered London until medieval times. There are about 6,000 acres of ancient forest, and an additional 2,000 acres, which have been acquired to protect the area from development. Much of the forest is a Site of Special Scientific Interest as there are over 360 rare plants and animal species present there and about 500 deer roam in the forest and deer sanctuary.

Greenwich Park is a beautiful 163 acre park set on a hill between Blackheath and the River Thames. The Old Royal Observatory and Flamstead House, created by Sir Christopher Wren, stand at the top of the hill. The meridian (0º longitude) dividing the globe into East and West passes through Greenwich Park at the Old Royal Observatory.

The Hampton Gardens and parks consist of 550 acres of deer-inhabited parkland. The main attraction of the gardens is the Pond Garden, a sunken water garden. The Fountain Garden has a formal pattern of yews and from here the Broad Walk runs across Home Park. Long Water, a man-made lake, runs parallel to the Thames. There is also a Victorian garden and the famous Maze.

Hampstead Heath is one of the capital's most popular outer green spaces. The rolling, semi-landscaped Heath divides the hilltop villages of Hampstead and Highgate and was formed from the grounds of several, separate properties.

Wimbledon Common is a vast area of open heath and woodland, stretching for more than two miles, it is criss-crossed by paths and horse tracks. In the north-east place is a windmill dating from 1817.

The Wetland Centre is the conception of the late Sir Peter Scott's Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. It has 105 acres of disused waterworks, amazingly close to the centre of London.

The nature lover will love it.

Pisa - More Than a Leaning Tower

Pisa attracts bus after bus of tourists every day of the year to see its most famous attraction. The leaning tower of Pisa has become an Italian symbol, much like Pizza and Pavarotti! The city has put a lot of effort into the tower and it is again safe to visit. Many people may be surprised to hear that the tilt is actually intentional, after architects concluded that the stories of the accidental tilt were most probably just that

Sea Trek Aruba

When my wife and I honeymooned in Aruba, we tried to pack in as much fun and adventure as possible. We snorkeled, hiked, explored and drove from one end of the island to the other. But of all the things to do in Aruba, my favorite was Sea Trek.

This adventure will take up a good chunk of your day but its worth it. Sea Trek is one of the most exciting things to do in Aruba as you actually get to walk around on the sea floor, 30 feet under water.

After a short ferry ride to neighboring DePalm Island, you'll receive safety instructions from the tour guides. They teach you how to decompress yourself so you do not get sick from the increased water pressure, and they teach you a series of hand signals so you can communicate with them underwater.

You can either go down in your bathing suit or a wetsuit. I recommend the wetsuit because the water temperature on the surface is quite chilly. If you only wear a bathing suit you'll be shivering uncontrollably. But in a wetsuit you'll be nice and comfortable.

The instructors help you put on a large helmet with an air hose connected, and then you slowly descend a 30-foot ladder (stopping along the way to decompress) until you reach the sea floor.

Once at the bottom, you'll be lost in a world of colorful fish and a small plane that was submerged on the site. The instructors take plenty of underwater photos which you can purchase once back on land.

The pictures are only a few dollars and its worth it. Its hard to explain the experience to someone who hasn't done it. A picture really is worth a thousand words.
